Interview with Dr. Robert Thurman of Tibet House

Over the past 30 years, I’ve met some incredible scholars, teachers and mentors during my travels. Perhaps the most influential to my understanding of Buddhism is Dr. Robert Thurman. This recent interview in The Lion’s Roar magazine by Jennifer Keishin Armstrong, truly captures Bob’s brilliance and wit. You can find the interview here.

Bob (or Tenzin) as he likes to go by, is one of the West’s leading experts on Tibetan Buddhism and was one of the first Americans ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist monk in the early 1960’s.

With his incredibly vibrant and colorful biography, Bob has been a leading champions of Buddhism in the West. At the request of H.H. The Dalai Lama, he founded Tibet House, a major force in the preservation an dissemination of Tibetan culture. After a long career teaching at Columbia University, Bob is now retired and focusing on teaching and writing.

Bob and I have co-led many fund raising trips for Tibet House around many parts of Asia, including many to Bhutan. If you’d like to learn more about future trips with Tibet House, please send your email address to us via the Stay In The Loop feature on this site.
